Privia

Casio Privia sample sounds as a sound source for Sibelius on Mac.

Casio Privia PX-350M is a digital piano with sample based sounds and a synth with General MIDI sounds and MIDI ports (DIN and USB). Audio out is possible with loudpeakers, headphones or line out. Some remarks about using it from within notation software Sibelius, on Mac. Sibelius First 7 and Sibelius Artist work fine, no need for the most expensive version.

To use the Privia as a sound bank, one must send MIDI commands to it. General MIDI sounds are not very good. For my purposes, it is desirable to use sample based sounds of Casio. From computer one must send MIDI commands bank select and program change (instrument change), to achieve the goal.

Computer is attached to the Privia with USB. Mac OS X needs a driver, I installed one called Casio USB MIDI Driver from GitHub. Then it can be seen from OS X app Audio MIDI Setup. And CASIO USB-MIDI has to be activated in Sibelius (Play - Setup - Configuration). (On the Privia, LocalCtrl does not need to be off. This setting can be found in the Function menu.)

In my Sibelius document (partiture), I set up General MIDI sounds for all instruments. Then I change to sample based sounds: for an instrument, for example tenor sax, I select the first note, specify Technique and write MIDI program change ~P48/66 (means: bank MSB 48 and program 66). I repeat this for every instrument. On playback, audio comes from the Privia.

Below are the bank and program numbers for instruments on my Privia. From the PX-350M manual.
